A few years back, I was standing in the pet aisle trying to figure out what to feed my dog. I picked up a bag of treats, flipped it over, and started reading. Carboxymethylcellulose. Thiamin mononitrate. Pyridoxine hydrochloride. Sorbic acid. Mixed tocopherols.
I'm not sure what I expected. Bacon, maybe.
I put the bag back and started Googling recipes for homemade dog treats. Turns out, you can make great ones with five ingredients you already have in your kitchen, beef, cheese, sweet potato, flour, an egg. They take twenty minutes to throw together. The dog goes nuts. Everyone wins.
There was one problem: I wasn't actually going to do this every two weeks for the rest of my dog's life. I have a day job and a habit of forgetting to eat lunch. The dog deserved better than my best intentions.
So I started Cooper's Treats to fix the gap between "homemade dog treats are better" and "I actually have time to make them." Our mixes are blends of freeze-dried meat and a handful of other simple ingredients. You add water, pour into a silicone mold (we sell those too), and either freeze them (we call those Pupsicles) or bake them. The whole process takes about five minutes, plus freezer or oven time. You get treats your dog loves, made from ingredients you can pronounce, without spending your Sunday in the kitchen.
Every ingredient in every Cooper's Treats mix is sourced in the USA. Every mix is made in the USA. We don't use preservatives, added salt or sugar, artificial colors, or artificial flavors. We do use real meat as the primary ingredient in every flavor, beef, chicken, turkey, lamb, because dogs are mostly carnivores and they're a lot more excited about beef than about wheat.
Each Pupsicle has about 20 calories, which means most dogs can have a few without blowing through their daily calorie budget. The mixes are labeled in compliance with AAFCO standards.
Most of our recipe testing now goes through Maple, my golden retriever mix. She is stupid (lovingly) and adorable and full of energy, and she will eat literally anything that isn't bolted down. This means she's a terrible quality control mechanism for "is this good?" but a fantastic one for "is this dangerous?", if she won't touch it, something has gone seriously wrong.
Most things, she enthusiastically endorses.
Our dogs are rescues, and a portion of every Cooper's Treats sale goes to animal rescues and charities working with dogs in need. We've been doing this since day one and we're not going to stop. If you're buying our treats, you're feeding your dog and helping another dog at the same time.
You might notice if you've been around a while that some of our flavors aren't on the site anymore, pumpkin, blueberry-beef, chicken-apple, a few of the seasonal ones. We've narrowed down to the core lineup that we can make really well, year-round, without compromising quality or making people deal with constant out-of-stock pages. If your dog had a favorite that's gone, sorry. The remaining flavors are the ones we're most confident in.
If you have questions, or your dog has a strong opinion about a flavor we should bring back, we're easy to reach. Thanks for trusting us with your dog's treats.
